How can I get to Dubai?
By plane to Dubai International Airport (DXB), located about 5km from the centre. Flights take about 7 hours from western Europe and 17 from New York.

How can I get from the airport to the centre?

When is the best time to travel?
From October to May because they are the coolest months. Temperatures in Dubai are always high, but the rest of the year is extremely hot and dry, with temperatures surpassing 40°C (104°F).

How can I get around the city?
The best way is to hire a car or use a taxi to get around. Distances tend to be long and public transport does not reach everywhere. Besides, the prices are reasonable.

What public transport can I use?
Dubai has two metro lines (red and green), a bus network and tram service that connects the metro stations to the residential zones. There are also water taxis, monorail and abras (traditional wooden passenger boats).

Is it a good place to go with children?
You will find an infinite number of places to enjoy with youngsters; there are several amusement parks and the majority of shopping centres have areas exclusively designed for children. They will love the Aquarium and Ski Dubai.

How should I dress?
Some places (particularly restaurants and shops) have a dress code that must be followed. Normally, women are required to cover their heads before entering a mosque. Going topless on the beach is not allowed.

How should I behave in public?
Despite being one of the most liberal places in the Muslim Middle East, there are certain points you must take into account in Dubai: it is considered disrespectful to show affection in public, even holding hands. Being drunk can be cause for arrest.

What do I need to know about Ramadan?
During the day you cannot eat, smoke or drink in public. Many restaurants only open after sunset. In general, international hotel restaurants stay open to cater to tourists.

Time Zone
The standard time zone in Dubai is UTC/GMT+04.

Language
The official language of Dubai is Arabic, but English is spoken practically everywhere.

Currency
The currency of the United Arab Emirates is the Arab Emirate Dirham (AED). The dirham to US dollar exchange rate is fixed (3.67 AED /dollar). One dirham divides into 100 fils.

Electricity
The electric current is 220/240 volts and 50 hertz.

Transport Tickets
An Nol card can be purchased in advance. The Nol Silver Card costs 25 AED and is rechargeable. The Nol Red Ticket is a paper ticket valid for 10 trips. It costs 2 AED plus the cost of the trips.

Opening Times
Friday is the holy day of the Muslim week and the weekend consists of Friday and Saturday, but some businesses close Thursday and Friday. Shopping centres usually open every day from 10:00 to 22:00.

Bargaining
In the souks and markets it is very common to haggle, trying to pay half of what the merchant is asking, but in shopping centres prices are fixed and bargaining is considered impolite.

Holidays
The main Muslim holidays change date according to the lunar calendar. Fixed holidays: New Year’s Day (1 January), HH Sheikh Zayed Accession (6 August), United Arab Emirates Day (2 December).
