KawagoeA small city from the feudal age

Elena Ortega

“Little Edo” was of great commercial and strategic importance between 1603 and 1868. The streets still posses an air of feudal times with their ancient buildings and clay warehouses. Highlights include the Kita-in Temple and its 540 statues of arhats (meaning one who is worthy); the Bell Tower, the most emblematic place in Kawagoe, and Kashiya Yokocho, a small street with shops selling artisanal sweets.

From Shinjuku station, take the Saikyo line to Kawagoe (50 min, 760 yen) or from Ikebukuro station, take the Tobu-Tojo line to Ogawamachi (30 min, 780 yen)
