What documentation do I need to travel to Tokyo?

A valid passport and return ticket is enough for a tourist visit. Most travellers don’t need a visa if the stay is for less than three months; some can even prolong their stay to up to six months.

Is Japan an expensive country?

Since 2012, with the depreciation of the yen, travelling to Japan hasn’t been expensive. Airline tickets have also come down in price. There’s a range of accommodation and restaurants to suit any budget.

When is the best time to travel?

Tokyo changes with the seasons, but March and April, with average temperatures of 17°C, are perfect for travelling. At this time of year, many tourists are attracted by the cherry blossom.

How can I get from the airport to the centre?

Tokyo has two airports: Narita, where most international flights come in, and Haneda, mainly used for domestic flights. Both have train services at their terminals (53 minutes from the first, and about half an hour from the second).

Is there a transport card in Tokyo?

We recommend buying the pre-paid Suica e-money card, which you can also use for shopping. It can only be purchased at airports or at Shinjuku and Tokyo stations.

How can I get around the city?

The most practical means of transport are the metro and the Yamanote train line, which connects the main zones of Tokyo.

Is there any other transport card?

Japan Rail Pass, but it’s only recommended if you’re making several long distance trips by train around Japan.

Which are the best areas for accomodation?

The Asakusa and Shinjuku wards are popular with young people because of the night life and range of hostels and hotels for tight budgets. Ginza, a little quieter, is where you’ll find the more luxurious hotels.

Sushi, sashimi, okonomiyaki, ramen, gyozas, yakitori, tempura, udon… Japanese gastronomy is one of the most diverse and successful in the world.
