The Fort Mason Centre consists of several buildings. The upper area sits on a headland, the site of the original coastal fortifications. The other is close to the water, at the former military port. Since it was opened in 1977, it has hosted an ever-changing artistic programme including theatre and dance performances, art installations, and educational and cultural classes. The initiative pioneered the re-use and preservation of US military bases.
