It became a National Park in 1972, nine years after the former Federal Penitentiary that once housed the country’s most dangerous criminals had closed. Among its most famous inmates were Al Capone and George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly, although the Anglin brothers and Frank Morris were also well known as the only convicts able to escape the prison.
