St Peter’s BasilicaThe Renaissance soul of Christianity
This is the heart of Christianity and the largest basilica in the city. Constantine, Rome’s first Christian emperor, built it on the place where St Peter was buried in the first century. It was altered in the Renaissance by Michelangelo and Raphael, among other artists. The large dome was inspired by the Duomo in Florence. La Pietà by Michelangelo, Bernini’s Baldachin (canopy) and St Peter’s bronze throne are some of its other marvels.
