General view of the souk

A tour of the Marrakech souks is a journey through time to the Middle Ages, in search of ancient traditions and crafts that are forgotten in the west.
The souks are one of the main attractions of Marrakech; more than 800 years old, they are located to the north-west of Jemaa el Fna Plaza and have as wide a variety of crafts as anywhere in the city. The stalls and stands are grouped by type. Among the best are: Souq Ableuh: the olive souk; Souq Semmarine: leather souk; Souq Joutia Zrabi: carpet souk; high-tech souk; Souq Kimakhine: louthier souk... Natural pharmacists can be found in the Rahba Kedima Plaza, where all kinds of medicinal plants, hennas and gommages are available.

If finding your way around Marrakech is tricky for the traveler, it is virtually impossible not to get lost in the hundreds of alleys that are the souks. It is best to just lose yourself among the nooks and niches; there will always be some kind person to show you how to get out of the labyrinth later.

At first you will be bewildered by the sheer number of items for sale. All kinds of craftwork: traditional costumes, slippers, spices, baskets, jewellery, ornaments, carpets, cosmetics and stalls with fakes and imitations. It is a feast for the senses and even without the intention to buy anything, you’ll still enjoy being bombarded by colours, aromas, sounds and crowds... The hustle and bustle between the alleys is hectic. You walk around half-dazed from one side to the other until suddenly something catches your eye and you decide to stop and get a closer look, and that’s when the true spirit of the Marrakech souks begins... the bargaining.

One of the essential rules for shopping in the souks is to never accept the first price you are given. Haggling is more than getting a discount: it is part of the country’s culture and Arab culture in general. The souks of Marrakech were the meeting point for caravan merchants; products were traded here only after negotiating the initial sales price. The negotiation technique has remained to this day and extends throughout the Arab trading tradition, where it is also very common to negotiate prices before buying. In the souks, it is part of the vendor-buyer game to start with a very high price; if the trader sees real interest from the buyer, he’ll invite them to a mint tea, and then the haggling really gets going. It is important to note that the trader will feel offended if the haggling is only done for amusement. Remember that this is their livelihood and while it should be fun, it should not be the target of jokes by visitors.

Sebbaghine Souk

This is the dyers’ souk, one of the most colourful in Marrakech. You can watch the artisans as they dye wools and fabrics, hanging them out in the sun (it is very striking to see the multi-coloured cloth hanging in the alleys). Remember that often much of the colour comes out when washed.

Cosmetic and Herbal Products

There is an enormous variety of traditional herbolists and pharmacists in Marrakech offering cures for all ailments. The famous argan oil is essential to Berber culture, rich in natural ingredients that play an important role in cell renewal and regeneration.
