EdirneA crossroads between civilizations
Edirne (Adrianople) is close to the borders of Greece and Bulgaria, and so has served as a strategic position for more than one civilization (Thracian, Goths, Greeks, Romans, Turks …). It is famed for its many mosques, including Selimiye and Eski. If you are travelling in June, it’s worth going to the traditional oil-wrestling tournament called Kırkpınar, an event older than even the Olympic Games. And if you have time, see the Dardanelles strait (200km away) and cross over to Canakkale, the city closest to the ruins of ancient Troy.
