How can I get to Havana?
The best way to get to Havana is by plane, to the José Martí Airport, also known as Rancho Boyeros Airport, in the municipality of the same name, about 20 kilometres from Havana.
How can I get from the airport to the centre?
Taxi is the best option. The taxi rank is at T3 and the trip from the airport to the city centre takes about 30 minutes. The price is around 15-20 CUC. You could also take a minibus.
When is the best time to travel?
June, July and August are the hottest months. The weather is milder in April, May, September, October and November. Hurricanes are more likely in September and October. The nights are cooler from December to March.
How can I get around the city?
Public transport is unreliable and not recommended for tourists. The best way is to get around on foot or by taxi, cocotaxis (motorised tricycles) and collective taxis.
Which are the best areas for accomodation?
Vedado is the most popular area with its luxury hotels. Old Havana is a romantic zone with restaurants and bars with live music. There are also Centro Habana, Miramar and Playa (although the beach is 15 kilometres away).
Is it a good place for traveling with kids?
Havana has some great places especially for children, such as the National Aquarium (with dolphins, sea lions and huge variety of fish), the zoo, the Guiñol National Theatre and the Cuban National Circus.
Is tipping mandatory?
In Cuba, everyone expects to receive a tip, from the musicians in restaurants to the ladies who look after the bathrooms (0.10 CUC), to the guides (2 CUC per person) and taxi drivers (10%, except on predetermined routes).
What are the usual meal times?
Cubans usually have lunch early, at about 13:00. Dinner is more flexible, between 19:00 and 21:00.
Is smoking allowed?
Since 2005, smoking in public places has been banned, but the rule is overlooked in places like bars and restaurants.
