Useful Information

Health considerations

Before you travel to Thailand, it's a good idea to consult your doctor. They may be able to advise on what vaccinations you need. Alternatively, visit: www.tourismthailand.org/Travel-and-Transport/FAQs/Health-and-Safety Once you are in Thailand, it is advisable to drink only bottled water.

Money

The Thailand currency is the Baht (TBH). It is best to take your money in cash and change it there. The current exchange rate is US $1= 35 Bahts approximately.

Electricity

In hotels the plugs are usually a mix of American and European, but if you need an adapter, you can get one there for 20 Bahts. The electricity current is 220V / 50 HZ.

Business Hours

Business hours in shopping malls are from 10:00 to 22:00, although that may vary depending on the shop. There are 24-hours shops all over the city. Banks and museums close at 15:30 and 16:00, respectively.

Traffic and traffic jams

Bangkok is one of the cities with the worst traffic in the world. As well as the infamous traffic jams, the roads are rather chaotic so you must be careful when walking, too. Always look carefully before crossing.

Haggling

Be practiced to practice this skill in Bangkok. Both market vendors and taxi or tuk-tuk drivers inflate the price and expect you to haggle. What is the trick? Offer half of what you want to pay.

What to wear

Bangkok is almost always very hot so it is better to wear lightweight clothes. Of course, you will have to wear long trousers and shirts or blouses with sleeves as a sign of respect when you are visiting temples. Luckily many offer clothes to cover yourself properly.

Local traditions

Do not go barefooted into temples, avoid touching another person’s head, (because it is considered to be a sacred part of the body) and you should stand up when you hear the national anthem, as a sign of respect for the Royal Family.

Useful telephone numbers

Country prefix: + 66 Emergencies: 191 Tourist police: 1155 or 02 408 0333 Tourist police at Suvarnabhumi airport: 02 132 1155 Tourist police at Don Muang airport: 02 535 1155 Tourist Assistance Centre in Bangkok: 02 356 0650

Medical assistance

In Bangkok there are good hospitals, but their prices are quite high and they will only give you medical attention after having previously verified that you can pay. As such, it is a good idea to have medical insurance.
