Its 19th-century architecture and the layout based on where the animals come from make the Artis Royal a very different kind of zoo. It was founded in 1838, the first zoo in the Netherlands. Today it is home to over 750 animal species and around 300 varieties of tree. Located in the city centre, it has a large aquarium and a pavilion devoted to insects and butterflies, as well as the first microscopic creatures museum, Micropia.
